Kamil… we’re already selling stocks and bonds on your garden!

It’s like everyone’s given seeds that are capable of growing into the garden of their dreams, but no one’s been told they even have them. Then, when they see their neighbor’s garden growing, whether it’s because their neighbor actually found their seeds or accidentally spilled them, there’s a rush to see what’s happening. How To Clone A WordPress Blog to another domain or URL

I created a blog for one of our customers, and I wanted to clone it to 2 other domains. I have spent the whole day creating and customizing it, so there was no way I was going to do it again. The first thing I did, of course, was to google it. I have spent 2 hours researching it and I was not happy with what I found: either not clear, or too complicated, or you had to pay for some software.

I decided to use two plugins:

  1. Ort Migrate.
  2. X-Cloner.

The first one did not like FTP username (it tested ok, but displayed error message on a real run), while the second created a nice backup, but did not clone it – just displayed the blog within my WP admin page and that’s it – no buttons to continue or any other clues. I skyped a friend, but  his internet connection was rubbish at that time. Ok, calm down, I thought – let’s sleep on it.

The next day I used Google again, and … behold. I found this great video. Very easy to follow (for a technical guy like me, at least, and if you’re not technical, than don’t touch technical stuff 🙂 – or give it a go, why not?). Have a look:

  1. Compress your existing WP installation.
  2. Create a new database.
  3. Create a new database user and add it to the new database (make a note of all the names and passwords).
  4. Copy or move the compressed installation to the destination folder and unzip it.
  5. Go to PHPMyAdmin in Cpanel.
  6. Export the old database.
  7. Open the newly created database and import the old one here.
  8. In the new WP installation folder edit wp-config.php.
  9. Change database and username details to reflect the new ones you just created.
  10. Add the below code and modify the URL accordingly.
  11. Save the file.
  12. Test the new site.

define(‘WP_HOME’,’http://XYZ.com’);

define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’http://XYZ.com’);

I hope this will work for you as well as it did for me. The above scenario is for cloning withing the same hosting account. With two different hosting accounts you will need to log in to Cpanel and PHPMyAdmin twice.
